After speaking to all of the friendly townsfolk, they directed us to the most western hut in Malora. I stepped inside and immediately noticed how different it was from the rest of the town. Tables were covered with clothes and leathers like a seamstress’s. A furnace burned off to one side, letting steam rise into the air and through the hole in the ceiling. The smell of char and metal filled my lungs enough to make me question if I was still in Malora.

A lone, shirtless man stood off to one side, his back turned as he was busy with whatever it was he was working on.

“Are you Lowell?” I asked.

“Leave your materials on the table. I will get to them when I can.”

“I don’t have any materials.”

“What? Then what are you—” He spun around and paused as soon as he saw me.

The man was different from the others I’d seen. He was noticeably short. But what he lacked in height, he made up for with a muscular frame that dwarfed everybody else in the village. He ran a hand through his dark, sweaty hair then furrowed his wrinkled brow in confusion.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Virgil. Rhiannon. Zafina. We’re travelers from the north. You’re Lowell, right? Couture sent me.”

He grumbled with an upset look on his face. “I’m Lowell. What does Couture ask of me now?”

“He didn’t tell me anything. Only told me to come to you because of something called the Mekat he wants me to be in.”

“You? He wants you to take part in the Mekat?” Lowell reared his head back and cackled a low-pitched laugh.

I raised an eyebrow at Zafina and Rhiannon but they were both just as confused as me.

Lowell finally regained his composure and shook his head. “Couture. The man truly has no shame. As all Malorans do.”

“No offense, but you don’t seem like the others…”

“No offense taken, my friend. Malorans take pride in their carefree attitude. They live every day as if it is their last. Nothing embodies that more than the Mekat. A hedonistic Maloran tradition.”

He turned his head sideways as he examined me then nodded. “You are foreigners but your body composition is not strange. I will have the outfits prepared for you by the evening.”

“Hold on.” I threw my hands up. “I still don’t understand what the Mekat is.”

“Perhaps that is for the best. I see you have reservations. There is no combat involved. If you were able to successfully cross the prairie, it should be a trivial matter for you.”

“That’s good—”

“Unless you are shy.”

“Shy?” My eyes widened, not sure I wanted to hear a further explanation.

He didn’t give it to me anyway. Lowell just slicked his hand back through his thick hair again and turned around. “Yes, it is for the best you don’t know. That is for certain. I’ll see you in the center of Malora at sundown with the others.”

We stepped out of the hut and back out into the sun as it lowered in the distance.
